Technology at the Waukesha
Public Library
The library offers
several technologies for public use at the library and anticipates that
both the scope and variety of such public accessible technology will
continue to expand in the future.
Public Access Internet
The library currently has approximately 35 workstations, all
of which have access to a networked laser printer,
available for public searching of the World Wide Web. In addition, we have four workstations
which are dedicated to research in subscription databases. Wireless Internet access is also available for
customers who bring their own laptop computers.
Subscription Database Access
The Public Access Internet workstations are configured to provide free access
to 4 pages of paid subscription databases. These databases include:
Auto Repair Reference Center
The Encyclopedia Americana Online
The EBSCO full text magazine databases
The NoveList reader's advisory product
Grolier's database of seven online encyclopedias
Morningstar
and several more...
Public Access Microsoft Office PCs.
Thanks to a gift from the Gates Foundation, the
library is able to make 4 PCs, each with Microsoft Office
software and a shared laser printer, available to customers needing access
to word processing with Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Excel, etc.
Children's Technology
The Children's library has two technology areas available for younger customers. One area contains computers loaded with
educational games and learning tools. The other area is aimed more at older children who need resources for homework. These computers
are loaded with a variety of reference tools and permit the retrieval of up-to-date information from specific internet sources.
Assistive Technology
The library has a variety of assistive
technology devices available for physically challenged customers. Assistive
technology devices include:
For visually
impaired customers:
A PC equipped
with voice synthesis and screen enlargement technology that allows
a customer to search the library's computerized catalog and the Internet.
A Reading
Edge reading machine.
A closed
circuit television print enlarger.
A public
photocopier with enlargement feature.
For deaf and
hard of hearing customers:
